of the proudest times in my years in the u.s. senate is when a former vietnam friend spent a little time. . i was proud of the g.i. bill because we were able to get to world war ii veterans, jim webb and chuck hagel, we got together and we got the boat and passed the bill. that is the way things should work or this country. the objective was not to get jim webb or chuck hagel any credit. the inductive was to do something for the country, -- the objective was to do something for the country on the do something for the people. this kind of attention, this kind of recognition -- much of my life has been about doing everything i can in some way to help veterans and their families, whether it was a program or whatever it was. i'm proud of that. i'm more proud of that than anything else i have been involved in. i'm proud of my background and my career, like all of you are. nothing makes me prouder or has ever made me prouder. to each of you in this room, as of you who are watching this around the world, i say to you, thank you. thank you to you for your service and sacrifices. i will do everything

on sunday as retaliation for his firing. secondly, a u.s. marshal said in his affidavit, a member of the southwest border patrol. told the magistrate that he believes dorner is in mexico, and based in part a man looking like dorner, tied up the boat captain in san diego and attempting to take his 41 to 47 foot vessel and told the guy he was taking it to mexico to recover his boat that was last thursday and what was dorner doing up in big bear, up in the mountains far away? well, turns out, the marshall service had been tracking an associate of dorner he is jy, who had a relative who had property, a cabin up in big bear and was found about four hours later down in costa mesa, what that means, basically, four hours after his burning truck was found. that could be speculating here, his ride off that mountain after burning his vehicle. and so, where does that leave us? and finally, tmz is reporting tonight that they have obtained surveillance video from a scuba shop here in southern california of dorner, a man looking just like him, with two scuba tanks and scuba gear, purchasing that

in iraq but was hailed as perhaps the deadliest sniper in u.s. military history, was shot and killed on saturday by a troubled fellow soldier, a man he was trying to help. nbc news chief pentagon correspondent jim miklaszewski joins us with the latest on this. what are police and witnesses saying happened here and where things went so wrong for chris kyle? >> well, police in texas have one suspect in custody. eddie ray routh, a marine corps reservist, 25 years old, who apparently, according to reports, was suffering from ptsd. now, chris kyle and other veterans there in texas would often try to independently help those with ptsd by taking them to shooting ranges to sort of blow off steam. now, according to officials in texas, this was the first time that kyle and his friend had met eddie ray routh at this shooting range about 50 miles outside ft. worth on saturday, when suddenly and allegedly, routh opened fire with a hand gun at point-blank range allegedly again killing both kyle and the other former service member. now, routh is in jail, he's expected to be charged with two counts

the surge worked, what it did was extract the united states from a war that senator hagel believes the u.s. never should have been in, so he didn't sort of have that kind of strong push back. i think that truck made a very good point about what kind of sway he is going to have in congress. you know, the calculation of having a republican defense secretary as it was when bob gates remained as defense secretary for the first two years of the obama administration was to have someone there with the credibility to say, you know, this old cold war system can die. we don't need it. we can cut the budget here and put the money in cyber or put the money in some other activity that the united states considers relevant pursuing terrorists. right now it's not clear that he has enough juice with his own party that any of those arguments would necessarily work. i think that the white house has to be wondering did they buy the kind of authority from him and the kind of bipart sfwlan approach that they had hoped for? >> david, thank you very much. chuck, before i let you go, we've about the to talk about

in the snow today will help them in their search. meanwhile, police and u.s. marshals removed approximately ten bags of evidence from dorner's mother's home yesterday. police say both his mother and sister cooperated with the search. dorner is wanted for allegedly going on a deadly revenge-fueled rampage, targeting fellow officers and law enforcement officials he blames for ending his police career. >>> a new details this morning on the murder of a controversial south bay millionaire. documents just released reveal how ravi kumra was killed. he was died on his kitchen floor of asphyxiation. suspect used packaging tape to blindfold and gag him and tied his hands and feet behind his back. three men and a woman have been charged in connection with in case. police say kumra frequently hired prostitutes, including the woman who is in custody. they believe she turned over information about his mansion to other suspects who are gang members. the gangs are known to carry out home invasions, targeting asian and indian families. according to the affidavit, dna evidence led them to those suspects. >>>
